It is estimated that within the state of Assam there is a backlog of 15,000 patients living with untreated cleft lips or cleft palates (according to estimated figures from the Government of Assam). In May 2009, the Assam State Government in partnership with Operation Smile resolved to create a “Cleft Free Assam” through a Public Private Partnership model.
A critical element towards fulfilling the vision of a “Cleft Free Assam” is the establishment of a Comprehensive Cleft and Child Care Centre set up at the MMC Hospital for providing year-round surgical care to patients with cleft deformities. This centre is conceived to be a state-of-the art cleft care centre matching global standards to provide comprehensive care to patients of Assam having the capability of running 6 operating tables simultaneously.
