Screening practices for SAM in the community to improve bed occupancy in NRCs

To provide facility based management of children with severe acute malnutrition up to 5 years of life.

Screening practices for SAM in the community to improve bed occupancy in NRCs

    1. Frontline community workers (AWW, ASHA, ANM) identify children with SAM by using simple Mid Upper Arm Circumference (MUAC) tape. Regular growth monitoring at the Anganwadi centre or during Village Health and Nutrition Day is an opportunity for active case finding.
    2. RBSK Team identifies children with SAM during their routine visit to AWCs.
    3. The Social Welfare department does regular growth monitoring of each and every child at AWC and identified children with SAM are refered to the NRC.
    4. Doctors at OPD identify children with SAM and refer them to the NRC.
    5. Special Camps may be arranged by the NRC staff to identify children with SAM and refer to the NRC.
